A long, long time ago (actually in 2013) Capcom announced Deep Down, a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid dungeon crawler set in 2094. It was an intriguing new concept, and it was great to see a company known for constantly re-releasing new versions of their old games to actually be working on a new IP.
Some new footage was released in the following months, but as time went by, the updates stopped. Fans waited, and waited, but nothing became of Deep Down, prompting speculation that it had been cancelled. Despite no new official information coming our way for over a year, Capcom did repeatedly renew the trademark, suggesting that the game was still alive.
But there’s a catch: in the US, trademarks can only be extended five times within a period of three years, after which the trademark will no longer belong to the original holder. And Capcom have now renewed Deep Down five times. See the latest Request for Extension form here.
So, if Capcom doesn’t get something delivered by February, they will lose the license. Of course, they could still release it under a different name, but seeing as they already renewed the Deep Down trademark five times, they clearly seem pretty intent on calling it Deep Down. The clock’s ticking, Capcom.
