Bethesda Explains Why Quake Champions Isn’t Coming to PS4 and Xbox One

When Quake Champions was announced at E3 2016, a lot of people were very excited. It might not have had the same allure as some of the other AAA titles at the show, but Champions has been quietly bubbling under the surface, ready to erupt onto the scene in a big way.

But, and there’s always a but, it won’t be coming to console. It makes sense as Quake has always been more of a PC series, though it seems a little wild that Bethesda is missing out on two potentially huge markets.

Speaking at QuakeCon 2016, Pete Hines, marketing boss at Bethesda made the reason pretty clear: consoles simply aren’t powerful enough.

“You know, Quake Champions, maybe anybody else would’ve been like, ‘No, you have to do it, and it’s got to work on every platform,” Hines explained. “We were like, ‘No, it’s a PC-only thing. It’s this kind of game. It’s got to have this kind of performance, and it’s going to be on PC full stop.’ We feel very comfortable in making those calls.”

Hines didn’t completely rule out Quake Champions coming to console, but almost certainly not this generation:

“I guess theoretically there’s a chance. Who knows what future consoles look like? But this is full stop a PC product: 120Hz, unlocked frame rate. That’s the experience we want folks to have.”

Hines was talking at a conference during Quakecon where gameplay footage for Quake Champions was shown off for the first time. You can watch that below and also check out some of the deals you can find on Steam from Bethesda to celebrate the event.
