Although the last Harry Potter film was released more than five years ago, the series has not suffered from franchise fatigue, as The Cursed Child book has already sold over two million copies in the US in just two days of release, and it’s already the fastest-selling book of the decade in the UK, where it’s now sold 680,000 copies.
It really amazes me that people still go to the theater in the year 2016, but if these numbers are any indication, the stage adaptation of The Cursed Child is going to do gangbusters in the long run. Hell, the first batch of tickets have already sold out, with 250,000 more going on sale from Thursday 4 August.
Now, after the slightly disappointing theatrical run of Batman vs. Superman ($872,662,631 worldwide), just imagine how much The Cursed Child could be making for Warner Bros. if JK Rowling had opted for it to be made into a film instead of a stage play. Let’s face it, theater may have been all the rage in the days before screens and cameras were invented, but it’s had its day and should have gone the day of the dodo and the VHS long ago.
Well, at least Warner are releasing the spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in November, and that should also do gangbusters.
