Well, that didn’t take very long. Nintendo announced the NES Classic Edition, and Sega have already announced their very own ripoff. Stay classy.
Called the Mega Drive Classic game console, it’s, well, basically, it’s the same thing as the NES Classic Edition. A miniature version of the original Mega Drive with all your favourite games included. Have you no shame, Sega?
Although, they’ve actually topped Nintendo in one respect: they have 80 games built into the machines, whereas the NES Classic Edition only has 30. Sega’s creation also includes a built-in screen, so you can play it on the go. It’s due for release in October.
This isn’t the first time that Sega has plagiarized Nintendo, heck no! Their very own blue hedgehog was created purely to cash in on the success of Nintendo’s Italian plumber, and most of Sega’s previous consoles were also intended to cash in on the success of Nintendo’s far more successful machines.
Sega may have lost to Nintendo in the long run (they had to stop making consoles and become a third-party developer) but when it comes to the battle of the miniature throwback machines, we’ll have to wait until the end of the year to see who reigns victorious.
