New On Netflix: Jane The Virgin, The Forbidden Kingdom, Amazon Prime

Here we are again. You’ve jabbed the remote through every channel you’ve got twice to no avail. Time to switch on the Netflix box and cycle miserably through your favourites list. Why is there never anything new on here? It’s a magic box that delivers thousands of hours of content to your fingertips – but what’s new?

First world problems, right?

The first thing we recommend is that you go binge Daredevil season two. Go on. Do it now or we will know. Next, check out one of these new morsels joining Netflix this week.

Jane the Virgin (UK)

What is it: Okay, stick with us on this. Jane is a virgin saving herself for marriage. Unfortunately an overworked doctor just artificially inseminated her by mistake. Now she’s pregnant with the child of her high school crush. Hi-jinks ensue.

Why you should watch: It’s an outlandish soap opera premise but by some strange wizardry Jane the Virgin has earned near universal praise from critics. Much of the plaudits go to Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, for her strong portrayal of the title character. As comedies go, there are far worse sitcoms out there.

When: March 22

The Forbidden Kingdom (US)

What is it: An American teenager unwittingly uses an ancient artefact and is sent back to ancient China. To get home he must enlist the aid of Jackie Chan and Jet Li to defeat an evil warlord.

Why you should watch: Kung fu movies are awesome. Perhaps not as elegant as some home grown Chinese efforts (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero) this one still gives us a pair of genre veterans delivering some well choreographed action. There’s also some half decent humour stirred in there too.

When: March 24

Amazon Prime

This is kind of embarrassing actually. Possibly because Netflix think you’re still devouring Daredevil there really isn’t all that much new on the service either side of the pond. Don’t ever call us lazy though, because if you have access to Amazon Prime here are some things dropping there this week.

Brave (UK)

What is it: Pixar take us to Scotland and the tale of Merida, a rebellious princess feuding with her mother over plans for an arranged marriage. There’s magic and humour and people turning into bears left and right.

Why you should watch: Listen guys, we shouldn’t really have to explain why you should watch a Pixar movie. Brave isn’t quite a stone cold classic like Inside Out or Wall-E, but it’s an excellent story in its own right with a great voice cast (including Emma Thompson and Billy Connolly). Well worth a look.

When: March 26

Orphan Black Season three (US)

What is it: Sarah Manning and the clone club return and this time they’ve got a new faction to contend with. If you’re familiar you know the drill: sci-fi intrigue and an eclectic cast of characters (mostly played by one actress).

Why you should watch: Tatiana Maslany knocks it out of the park again as Sarah and her clone siblings. It might lack the level of mystery that surrounded season one, but it’s no less compelling as we slip further down the rabbit hole of the clone conspiracy.
