The Witcher Is Going To Be A Film

The video games are coming and they want our multiplexes. On the back of upcoming video game movies like Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed news broke today that in 2017 we’ll be getting a movie adaptation of The Witcher.

Well, actually the adaptation will more closely follow the original short stories from which the game itself was adapted, written by Andrzej Sapkowski. It’s unknown if game developers CD Projekt RED will have any involvement. On the other hand, that the film is happening at all must be at least partly thanks to the video game’s success.

On the positive side the movie will still follow the adventures of Geralt of Rivia. No news on who might play Geralt yet, as the film has just entered pre-production, but The Witcher will be coming to us from The Sean Daniel Company of The Mummy franchise. I know what you’re thinking, but deep down don’t you remember actually enjoying The Mummy?

For those who’ve never played The Witcher, the game follows Geralt as he hunts monsters and goes on epic quests in a land known as the Continent. There’s magic and swords and stuff. Also, there’s sex on the back of a unicorn.

Platige Films, a Polish company involved in the new production, confidently state on their website: “The film will be an introduction to The Witcher’s world and is planned to be the beginning of a series.”

A bold statement, given that video game movies are still largely untested. We might be better off waiting for how 2016’s big video game outings fare before we share Platige Films’ confidence.

The Witcher has experience of screen adaptation already, albeit for television. In 2001 and 2002 The Witcher (known internationally as The Hexer) was a poorly received TV show and a badly edited movie. Here’s hoping the Hollywood treatment delivers something better.
