According to information from a representative at NATO (National Association of Theatre Owners), they are predicting that 90% of theatres will reopen come mid July, and this is on a global level. This claim is interesting since the group is only in charge of American theatres, not international ones.
Of course, this comes as good news for Tenet, the upcoming blockbuster film from Christopher Nolan, the one movie which didn’t budge on its original release date of July 17. In its most recent trailer, there was no mention of a theatrical release date, just the emphatic statement of the film being released in cinemas. However, the description box for the trailer still cites the July 17 release date.
If most cinemas are open by then, the movie can still proceed with its release, though it’s hard to say for certain given the fact that we don’t exactly know what the 10% comprises of, and whether Warner Bros. would want to release the film in July when things are still so volatile on the virus front.
Mark Zoradi, the CEO of movie chain Cinemark, said that he’s been in conversation with Tenet studio Warner Bros., and that they remain optimistic about the movie opening on schedule for its July release. Only time will tell.
