Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, going into the weekend, looked like the favorite at the PGA and SAG awards for their respective top honors, but that didn’t happen.
Both the Producers and Screen Actors Guilds went with different films: 1917 for PGA, and Parasite for SAG. Starting with Parasite, this is an unprecedented win: it’s always been a struggle for foreign language performances to be nominated at SAG, let alone in an ensemble category, and on top of that taking the top prize of the evening.
This makes the season a bit more unpredictable for the Best Picture award, which is also in motion with 1917’s win at PGA, but more on that in a second. To wrap up SAG otherwise, everything else went according to plan with Laura Dern (Marriage Story), Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Renee Zellweger (Judy) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) all taking home their individual acting prizes at SAG.
1917, which I had as third most-likely to win at SAG, will continue to make a tear through the rest of the awards season. It is now in the lead for the Directors Guild win this Saturday, though Bong Joon-Ho is right on 1917’s director, Sam Mendes’ heels, and with the SAG win for Parasite, this might be an even match. Also, we can’t forget they both tied at Critics Choice for the directing prize, so this will be quite the competition.
I will have some updated thoughts on Best Picture and the other categories later this week with some updated predictions before we go into the DGA’s on Saturday.
