Single of the Week: ETCHES – ‘Ice Cream Dream Machine’

Prick those ears pop-pickers and perk up, it’s SINGLE OF THE WEEK time. Here to get your week off to a positive start are Liverpool’s ETCHES with ‘Ice Cream Dream Machine’, the follow up to their debut single ‘THE CHARM OFFENSIVE’. Their first single definitely got the ball rolling, and garnered them some solid attention and critical praise, but this single is really going to send that ball into overdrive. Balls can’t ‘go into overdrive’. This analogy is terrible.

No matter though because ETCHES are not, and ‘Ice Cream Dream Machine’ sounds as good as you might imagine a real life one of those. I can feel myself getting fatter at just the thought of all that ice cream. Though, I’d probably just make someone kind of ice cream castle on ice cream clouds and take over the world. Thus would begin one hundred years of my brutal leadership.

Anyway, this ‘Ice Cream Dream Machine’ is in fact a brilliant blend of electronica, guitar based indie, and pop melodies, all delivered in a kind of nigh time haze of cool. It’s incredibly easy to imagine cruising some sleek and crystalline urban sprawl speckled with neon lights whilst listening to this track. There’s more to this track than the music though, as the lyrics deal with alienation, consumerism, and modern life delivered through a vocal that brings to mind Damon Albarn.

Sure, modern life is rubbish (see what I did there?), but ETCHES are not. ‘ave a goosy gander at the video below, and let the music in through the holes either side of your head. Out…. NOW.
