It’s been a rough start for Operation Ember Rise, the newest season in the fourth year of the hugely popular Rainbow Six Siege. DDoS and DoS attacks have been a frequent nuisance for those playing ranked during the new season (particularly, interestingly enough, on console), leading to Ubisoft finally taking action.
In a blog post, the Siege team detailed how “legal action against prominent DDoS/DoS attackers” was already well underway after cease and desist orders to websites with tools that make DDoS’ing easy. It appears as if the delay in response may be down to Ubisoft conferring with their legal team before taking action.
Other actions include serious ban waves across all platforms, and reducing hosting matches to one per server instead of three so that there’s less chance of more matches being hit by a DDoS or DoS. They are already reporting that the amount of DDoS attacks has decreased by 66% as a result.
To strengthen themselves against further attacks, Ubisoft will also be working closely with the Microsoft Azure team to find solutions.
DDoS attacks emanate from different devices with the intention of disrupting connections. DoS attacks are from a single device. DDoS is the term most use, but there are others that are more accurate to use to describe specific malicious attacks.
It’s good to see Ubisoft and the Siege team taking steps towards making ranked playable again, though you get the impression that it may be a while until things are exactly as they should be. In the meantime, I will personally just be practising in casual to get ready for my eventual climb out of Bronze. Please, don’t all clap at once.
