With Madden and Fifa now firmly on the shelves of game stores across the globe, October is shaping up to be one of the biggest months for game releases this year.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Shadow of War

Platforms: PS4/XB1/PC
Release date: 10/10/17

We start our list with one of the most eagerly anticipated sequels to hit the gaming calendar. Shadow of Mordor remains one of the best games I have ever played, and judging by the gameplay videos that are now flooding the internet, Shadow of War is shaping up to be just as brutal and visceral as the first.

For this outing, we see Talion not only bring down those pesky Orc generals, but also lay siege to citadels and take on giant spiders all at the same time. We also see the return of the outstanding Nemesis Engine that was a cornerstone of the first game.

Although I am looking forward to this release, I do find myself feeling a little apprehensive. They recently revealed that there are a serious amount of microtransactions in this game, something the first one did not have and did not need. Although the developers have assured us that everything can be earned through the game, I still feel that they are trying to make a quick buck from the gamers.

The Evil Within 2

Platforms: PS4/XB1/PC
Release date: 13/10/17

The Evil Within was one of the first games I picked up when I invested in my next gen console, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. The brutal gameplay, twisted storyline, and underlying hints of mental illness made this game a gem, and was a fantastic throwback to the survival horror games of the past.

This time, we follow Sebastian as he tried to rescue his daughter from a secret organisation, while trying to fight off the stuff that look as if they have been ripped from someone’s nightmares. As long as they stick to the same recipe that they used for the first game, then this one is certain to be a winner.

WWE 2K18

Shinsuke Nakamura WWE 2K18

Platforms: PS4/XB1
Release date: 13/10/17

2K has once again taken the helm of WWE’s yearly game, and we can all hope that they do a better job of this one than they did last year. With a new career mode that focuses on either being Face or Heel, the biggest roster ever featured in a wrestling game to date (although some popular wrestlers have been left out), and with some gorgeous character models, WWE 2K18 looks set to the be the best edition yet.

However, if the game is structured anything as it was last time around, then this game will be held back by a poor season pass, irritating additional content (these included wrestlers that were heavily featured in the weekly programming) and average gameplay.

This game will probably only appeal to the hardcore wrestling fans due to its heavy price tag of £54.99 for the standard addition, but with the roster that the game boasts, it seems that 2K has done an amazing job with this one.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

South Park Fractured But Whole

Platforms: PS4/XB1/PC
Release date: 17/10/17

South Park: The Stick of Truth was one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played, featuring an easy to navigate combat system and bursting with the same sick humour we have come to accept from the TV show.

Focusing on the standard RPG/fantasy genre that most gamers have come accustomed to, the game was a surprising hit, managing to be both hilarious and offensive whilst balancing this out with some hard hitting action.

For this outing, they have focused on superheroes, with the plot obviously being taken from Marvel’s Civil War. Judging by the gameplay trailers, they have included a similar combat system to the first game, with new powers and features introduced throughout. It also looks incredibly offensive and absolutely hilarious.

However, this game has been delayed and that is a cause for concern, but if The Fractured But Whole is set to be anything like the first, then I am certain it will be worth the wait.

Super Mario Odyssey

Platform: Switch
Release date: 27/10/17

Mario finally makes his eagerly anticipated debut on the Nintendo Switch, and from all accounts, Nintendo really have pulled out all the stops for this game. This time, Mario is sent on a globe-trotting adventure as he tries to stop the marriage between Bowser and Princess Peach.

We can expect to see a return of the usual faces, as well as some new ones designed for the Switch along with the fantastic platformer gameplay that we have come to associate with Mario.

With the Nintendo Switch lacking in blockbuster titles, Mario Odyssey is one of the most eagerly awaited games to be released on Nintendo’s newest console. If Zelda: Breath of the Wild is anything to go by, then this may be the game that tips my hand into buying a Nintendo Switch.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein The NEw COlossys

Platforms: PS4/XB1/PC
Release date: 27/10/17

The first reboot of Wolfenstein was a pretty average affair in my book, but still remains a decent first person shooter game that is available on the next gen consoles. The sequel is set in Nazi occupied America and focuses on BJ as he tries to rally the resistance and take the fight back to Nazi war machine.

Featuring more high tech robotic soldiers/animals, the trademark insane combat system, and what the developers have promised to be a deeper storyline, Wolfenstein may be one of the games that steals the top spot this month.

The trailer that was shown at E3 shows just how beautiful this game looks, and provides us with one of the most unnerving scenes that I have encountered since watching the Tarantino movie, Inglourious Basterds.

Assassin’s Creed Origins

AC Origins 3

Platforms: PS4/XB1/PC
Release date: 27/10/17

With Ubisoft taking a break from the franchise since Syndicate, Origins is maybe one of the most highly anticipated games of this year. This time, we travel back to ancient Egypt, to the time of the Pharaoh’s as we run around and slaughter our way to victory. Featuring an all new exploration mode, where gamers can learn about ancient Egypt as they play the game, brutal gladiatorial combat, and gorgeous graphics, Origins looks to be the game that fans of the series have been waiting for.

However, we are talking about Assassin’s Creed here, and we all know what happened to Unity, and how appalling the microtransactions could be in this game. For the Assassin’s Creed franchise to have any kind of future, this game needs to knock it out of the park.

So that’s about it for the games released in October. Are there any on the list you guys are excited for?
