6 Video Games Series’ That Should Be Movies

Mass Effect

Mass Effect

Bioware’s epic space trilogy is already pretty close to having a cinema worthy story anyway. Its universe and characters are as rich as any major movie franchise around. Star Wars, the Hunger Games, the Avengers? The adventures of human hero Commander Shepard, saving the galaxy from giant alien robot monsters from beyond the stars, could be just as compelling.

In fact, Mass Effect seems to mesh the tone and feel of both Star Wars and Star Trek quite well. Interesting alien races? Cool space ships? Epic action scenes? Mass Effect has all these things. It also has Garrus. Garrus is a badass.

Who would play the hero: Jessica Chastain (haters can hate, but femshep is canon).

Who would direct: Ridley Scott.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Yes, this is technically from an existing movie franchise, but this game is cinematic enough that it would have no trouble translating to the big screen. The writing is great, so much so that whoever were to write the screenplay could probably lift some good lines from the game verbatim. It also really feels like the Star Wars galaxy too.

Set four thousand years before Darth Vader was even a wee toddler, Knights of the Old Republic tells the story of a war between the jedi and two of their fallen brethren. The jedi pair have come back from uncharted space as  Darth Revan and Darth Malak, with a vast army on their side. But how did they fall to the dark side? And what really happened to Revan after they returned?

There is a lot of love for this idea on the internet, and with Disney’s plans to make spin off Star Wars flicks, this could realistically be on the cards.

Who would play the hero: Henry Cavill.

Who would direct: Michelle MacLaren (After her split from Wonder Woman, she’s looking for a project worthy of her skills).

Portal

Portal movie

What? That game were the protagonist doesn’t even have any dialogue and there are only two characters in the entire story? Yes, I’m calling for a Portal movie.

The original Portal game is a masterpiece of design in the way it blends gameplay, story and character development. If someone were to approach a film adaptation with a similar level of care there could be a very deep movie at the end.

After all, films like Moon and Gravity managed to make sci-fi stories with a tiny cast work well, for different reasons. The Portal movie could follow Chell (that’s what the game’s character is called) as she figures out what’s going on and decides whether she’s actually in a test or not. It probably wouldn’t cost all that much to make, and so could concentrate on exploring Portal’s major mysteries in more depth rather than delivering explosions and spectacle.

Who should be the hero: Morena Baccarin

Who should direct: Alfonso Cuarón
