REVIEW: 50/50

JGL head shave

Emma Rhodes reviews 50/50, starring JGL and Seth Rogen.

Some of the better films I find are those which have a solid cast but may not always be massively marketed and let the power of the film and the talent of the actors do the talking. I had gone to the cinema to see this film and would recommend the film to anyone but maybe not watching it in public or even on a first date as it can get a little emotional to say the least!

Anna Kendrick and JGL

This 2011 film was written by Will Reiser who has based the film on his own experience and battle against cancer offering a true human feel to the picture and is sure to tug on some heart strings from all audiences.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Dark Knight Rises) plays the loveable do-gooder Adam Lerner who is diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. The film is based upon the 27 year old’s emotional journey through his treatment and has a complete mix of highs and lows. The film also focuses on the emotional journey that not only Adam goes through but those close to him and the realities of something so serious with such uncertainty.

JGL with a bald head

Director Jonathon Levine managed to portray the true emotions of this serious topic across onto screen and the skill of the actors certainly helped. Some of the other cast include Seth Rogan (Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express) who of course brings his hysterical laugh and cheeky persona along as Adam’s best friend, helping him through the hard times and definitely ensuring there are some good times on the way. Adam’s awkward Psychologist is also played by the endearing Anna Kendrick (Twilight and Pitch Perfect) who definitely wins audiences hearts straight away shuffling in her chair whilst trying to discuss such a hard subject with her first patients.

Some of the fellow patients he meets during his treatment are also very endearing and again entertaining. There just isn’t really a slow part in the film which is nice and a little surprising considering the tone and topic. Without giving anything away there is also a few little twists in the film which simply add even more depth to the film without taking away any of its character.

JGL, Rogen and Kendrick

There are definitely some unexpected hilarious moments which really break the film up and release tensions. Adam is given a pet dog expecting to help him through his journey however the rescue dog may not be the most attractive as bony former racing greyhound, Skeletor. There is also a hair shaving scene which is definitely entertaining and a little gross at the same time!

I would say the film certainly looks at a wider picture and can definitely help us to realise that life is too short to not grab it by the horns and experience it to the maximum and it will definitely make you want to start a bucket list to start creating some great memories and experiences from. 50/50 has won over the majority of critics and it has certainly won me over.

JGL head shave

Despite being a serious film, it is still not too heavy and the charming cast certainly help lift the spirits and entertain. I give 50/50 an 8/10 for its great cast, laugh and cry a minute story and lasting adventure.
