5 Biggest Movies of September 2016: Oscar Bait Season Begins

Blair Witch

Well, it’s that time of the year again. Around September is where the films aspiring for award season greatness begin their respective releases. The race heats up around November, but because that month is usually hectic in the run up to Christmas, some ‘Oscar-bait’ films tend to be released early (September/October time).

But that’s not all that September will have to offer, oh no! Let’s take a look. Bare in mind though that September is sort of a quiet time for films in comparison to the Summer months. These are what I imagine will be the biggest releases though.

1. Sully

Clint Eastwood is back! After his big success with American Sniper, Eastwood looks to be tackling a less controversial figure/story with Sully. The story of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenburger and First Officer Jeffery “Jeff” Skiles and US Airways Flight 1549, the film is the ‘untold story’ of the ‘miracle on the Hudson’ back in 2009. It stars Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart in the lead roles and it honestly looks awesome.

2. Blair Witch

I thought that we were over the found footage genre? Apparently not, I guess. The sequel to The Blair Witch Project (and apparently ignoring that other sequel), this film continues the story of the original film by revealing that the lead female in the original film had a younger brother. And he’s now looking for his sister. 20 years later. The trailer, though the marketers try to convince us otherwise, looks exceptionally standard, and thus boring. But I may watch it, early reviews from critics have all been positive, which is something. Still, if you’re into your found footage films, here’s the sequel to the one that popularised it back in 1999.

3. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

I’ll be honest, I’m not much of a Tim Burton fan. Sure, I’ve enjoyed a few of his films, but the only exceptional one for me was Big Fish. So damn good. His new film looks… interesting. You might say that it looks peculiar. No I won’t apologise. Oh and look, Eva Green. She’s one fantastic lady. I can’t say that I’m particularly interested in this film, but it shows some promise. Individuals with strange abilities, living in seclusion for fear that the rest of the world reject them, will join forces to save the world. Wait a minute, I swear I’ve seen this film before…

4. Snowden

Early Oscar-bait number two! I’ve been very excited from this since its announcement, quite a while ago now. I’m something of a Joseph Gordon-Levitt fanboy. And Edward Snowden’s story is certainly an interesting one. The trailers shown so far look fantastic. It’ll be interesting to see if the filmmakers try to keep impartial, objective; state the facts as they were without taking sides so that the general audience can make up their own minds. It’ll be interesting to see the reception and fallout of this film’s general release. Very interesting indeed.

5. Bridget Jones’s Baby

Now this looks like good old fashioned fun. The continuing story of Bridget Jones. The crux of the story this time is that she’s pregnant and doesn’t know who the father is. From the looks of the trailer, it feels exactly like the first two films. It’s like Bridget never left. It won’t be amazing (the first two certainly weren’t) but this series has always been fun. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Also Emma Thompson’s role looks amusing. She’s always a pleasure to watch.
