Not everybody is good at playing videogames. It’s a fact. Although many self-proclaimed hardcore gamers may not care to admit it, they were rubbish once too. Whether you just need a starting off point or have sworn off the ‘serious’ competitive games such as Call of Duty for life, here are five fun and simple games to keep you entertained, without having to be reduced to the likes of Tetris and Peggle!
Beautiful Katamari
Simplicity: Opposable thumbs.
Attraction: Super fun and de-stressing.
Some people just want to watch the world burn. Others want to roll it up into a giant ball and cackle mercilessly at the helpless humans. This is where the wonderfully trippy and colourful Katamari games come in. Following the ridiculous commands of the King of All Cosmos, the game literally consists of using your analog sticks to roll everything from assorted bits of stationary to the entire universe into a ball, whilst being (hilariously) patronised. Best played alone as two-player mode is sadly rather dull.
Fable II
Simplicity: Large-scale button-masher.
Attraction: Lots of freedom, interesting storyline, some famous voices.
A role-playing game set in ancient Albion (England). You are the chosen one and it is your mission to save Albion using your powers (natural and magical). All of your actions have consequences – you might be a pure, law-abiding citizen and be loved by everyone. Or perhaps you will go on a murderous rampage through your hometown, leaving your fellow citizens screaming and cowering in fear at the sight of you. Either way this is an ideal starter game and can be extra fun in co-op mode causing havoc with your best friend or your partner.
Castle Crashers
Simplicity: Button-masher.
Attraction: Adventure!
A slightly old-fashioned yet charming 1-4 player co-operative game, in which you play a knight. Enter castle, beat up guards, steal all the things, rescue princess, defeat evil wizard. The graphics are simple, making it an ideal choice for those that get a headache from games with too much going on. There is good variation in the individual terrains of each level. Playing alone is not recommended as you will be seriously outnumbered by the guards.
L.A. Noire
Simplicity: Fairly straightforward.
Attraction: Being a super cool detective
If you ever fantasized about be part of a kickass detective duo, this is definitely something to consider playing with a friend or partner. If the gameplay isn’t for you, you can still enjoy helping to solve the crimes, using the skills you’ve acquired (from watching far too much Dexter, Psych, CSI or similar) to scope out the criminals and piece together a crime scene. Order in some burgers and pop and you could have a surprisingly fun night ahead!
Portal
Simplicity: Puzzle-solving
Attraction: Sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm.
The only real challenge in this game is the challenge to your logic and reasoning as you try to solve the puzzles. It is an ideal game for beginners because it’s non-threatening. That is to say, you’re not thrown straight into the deep end and you’re not going to be attacked, it’s simply a case of learning how to use the portal gun efficiently whilst being subjected to relentless, hilarious mockery from GLaDOs. The storyline is really interesting too!
Other Suggestions
Here are some other games you may consider trying out. I found these fairly simple but it really depends on how fast you are at picking up controls and what kind of genres you enjoy.
Banjo Kazooie, Assassin’s Creed, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Halo 3.
Happy gaming!
