X-Men: Apocalypse Gets A Trailer, Drops Story Hints

We really should have expected this at some point. After getting trailers for next year’s Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it wasn’t going to be long before we got a teaser for X-Men: Apocalypse. Without further ado, then, here is your trailer for 2016’s big X-Men adventure.

It’s becoming  harder to gauge how much of the audience for superhero films are tuned in to who’s who and what’s what in these movies, but if you’re not let me explain what’s going on here. The film’s subtitle, “Apocalypse”, isn’t actually referring to the end of the world but a character from the X-Men comics of the same name. He’s the purple guy in the trailer who looks like a modern day re-imagining of Ivan Ooze from Power Rangers. As the trailer explains, he was the first and apparently most powerful mutant in history. Looks like the guy’s quite keen on destroying the world here.

Ivan Ooze, or Apocalypse?

Meanwhile, the trailer also gives us our first glimpses of Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and new Cyclops Tye Sheridan in live action. There’s also Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Nightcrawler, the blue teleporter guy who we last saw played by a different actor in X-Men 2. Oh, and Straight Outta Compton‘s Alexandra Shipp as Storm, looking pretty bad ass pulling off a mohawk haircut. Going forward, these guys will probably be the stars of the next batch of movies, but for now expect James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence to be the central characters.

Honestly, apart from the new characters there isn’t a lot to say about this trailer. It looks like the film is fairly happy sticking with the same style as the last X-Men flick, except now we’re in the 80s. If anything, the whole thing is at risk of being overstuffed, and judging by the cast list it’s difficult to see how the movie can do justice to all its characters within its run time. The entire project is very reminiscent of Avengers: Age of Ultron in that respect.

Still, it looks like it can deliver what you want from a summer blockbuster. For now though, we’re still more excited for Deadpool. Here’s hoping he makes a cameo in this.
