In a game where your emotions do most of the playing for you, The Last of Us’ soundtrack gets its merit from its simplicity, taking the tone of isolation and foreboding and running with it all the way.
9. Splinter Cell Double Agent
Track: Okhotsk – Behavior
The first video game effort from Michael McCann (Deus Ex: Human Revolution) then known as Behaviour, is a slick and gritty soundtrack to Sam Fisher’s dark spycraft adventure, and arguably the best in the series.
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Track: Sons of Skyrim – Jeremy Soule
When the reveal trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was first released, playing out to the chanting theme: “Sons of Skyrim”, it gave me chills. Nearly five years later, it still does. That’s a powerful soundtrack if ever there was one.
7. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
Track: Blood Dragon Theme – Power Glove
It’s as if someone threw every soundtrack from eighties movies and TV into a blender and hit the button. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon’s soundtrack is the smooth neon paste that resulted, and it is delicious.
6. Red Dead Redemption
Track: Born Unto Trouble – Bill Elm & Woody Jackson
Former outlaw John Marston’s adventures through the Old West are complemented by a distinctive soundtrack, dodging stereotype and cliché by introducing slightly modern elements to create more of a homage to the old theme of the American West.
