Autumn is always a great time for book releases. Perhaps because it’s also the perfect season for reading books (though, let’s be honest, when isn’t the perfect time for reading books).  To add to your Autumn reading, here are a few of the biggest books coming out this October that you should add to your TBR list:
Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor
The anticipated sequel to Akata Witch by Nigerian Afro-Futurist writer, Nnedi Okorafor. You might recognise her as the Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of the novella Binti, or maybe as the author of Who Fears Death, the post-apocalyptic novel being developed into a HBO series with executive producer George R. R. Martin.
If you don’t recognise her by now, you need to start reading Okorafor. And October is probably the perfect time to start the Akata Witch series.
Out Oct. 3rd
The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur
Rupi Kaur made big strides in poetry with her debut collection Milk and Honey, which sold more than half a million copies and became an Amazon bestseller.
It’s a big feat for any writer, but especially for a self-published poet in 2015 who got her start through insta-poetry.
Her second collection promises to continue in the tradition of Milk and Honey with poems that explore life and love.
Out Oct. 3rd
Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani
Nidhi Chanani’s debut graphic novel follows the story of Priyanka Das, who is desperate to learn about India – a home that her mother left many years ago.
When she finds a pashmina, she finds herself transported to a place that might answer all of her questions.
Out Oct. 4th
We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy by Ta-Nehisi Coates
I’m sure most people know Ta-Nahesi Coates by now. If it’s not for Between the World and Me, which won both the PEN and the National Book Awards, then it’s probably for his work writing for Black Panther.
Either way, his new book We Were Eight Years in Power promises to be a book for our times, filled with important political and cultural criticism. It takes note of Obama’s eight-year presidency and how it has influenced modern America.
Out Oct. 5th
Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
It’s been five years since John Green’s last novel, The Fault in Our Stars, took the book and non-book world by a storm. Since then Green has been a household name, especially since both The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns< made it onto the big screen.
So John Green might not have been making his way onto our bookshelves for the past five years, but he has definitely not been forgotten. Which is why Turtles All the Way Down is such a highly anticipated release.
Out Oct. 10th
Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao
Despite the love of the fantasy genres within the book community (and – let’s face it – the general nerd community), most popular fantasy tends to have Western settings, based off of Western culture, philosophy, history, and geography.
However, Julie C. Dao’s Forest of a Thousand Lanterns promises to be a richly-woven East-Asian inspired fantasy. It follows Xifeng as she attempts to fulfill her destiny of being the Empress.
Out Oct. 10th
Dear Martin by Nic Stone
This timely debut by Nic Stone follows Justyce McAllister who must face up to the realities of being black in America. He looks to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers by starting a journal addressed to him.
Following in the steps of Angie Thomas’ New York Times bestselling novel, The Hate U Give, Dear Martin is an important examination of police violence and race in modern-day America.
Out Oct.17th
A Line in the Dark by Malinda Lo
You might recognise Malinda Lo as the acclaimed author of the Cinderella re-telling, Ash, or the sci-fi series Adaptation
Her latest novel seems to diverge from her usual sci-fi/fantasy. Instead, it tells a story of friendship, love, and the mystery of a murder.
Out Oct. 17th
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by EriKa L. Sánchez
Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter, but her sister Olga is. When Olga dies in a tragic accident, Julia has big shoes to fill. But then Julia discovers that Olga might not have been the perfect Mexican daughter either.
I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter is a debut novel about family, culture, and immigration.

The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage by PHILIP Pullman
The last His Dark Materials book, The Amber Spyglass, was released in 2000. It has been 17 years since we left the amazing world that Pullman created in the His Dark Materials series.
But this October, the first book from the Book of Dust series will be bringing us all back into a world full of daemons.
Out Oct. 19th
The Bloodprint by Ausma Zehanat Khan
Ausma Zehanat Khan is probably best known for her mystery novel, The Unquiet Dead. The Bloodprint crosses her over into the fantasy genre.
When a dark, patriarchal power called The Talisman rises in the land, a group of influential women must find the Bloodprint to stop it.
