Single of the Week: Estrons – ‘Make A Man’

estrons make a man

ESTRONS = ALIENS

An equation emblazoned by the band themselves that is quite literally true given that ‘estrons’ is Welsh for aliens (or strangers), quite actually true given that the Cardiff based band are a little bit of everywhere other than there (sort of), and quite musically true given that their brand of frenetic rock stands out uncannily among the rest of the pack right now. It’s not because their music is out there and experimental or something you’ve wholly never heard before, but because whilst familiar there’s definitely something ‘other’ about them, a little alien.

I’m not here to try and pin down what that is though, because that’d just take the magic out of it if you knew how the trick worked. No, I’m here to tell you that Estrons latest single, ‘Make A Man’, is our Cultured Vultures’ Single of the Week and for why that is. Though, upon your listening to the track that will become immediately apparent; shot through with adrenalin and an equally energised sex drive, the track is a three minute raw power punch from start to finish.

Estrons combine a little bit of this and that from the usual suspects of punk, grunge, lo-fi, and guitar-driven indie, hitting the sweet spot between each of them, but at its core ‘Make A Man’ is a ferocious slab of infectious off-kilter power pop. The track, just like crack, is ever so moreish, and when not listening to it, you’ll find yourself humming it unknowingly. Mind you, it’ll be a pretty up-tempo hum at that.

Anyhow, as my hyperbole would suggests it’s a cracking track and a sure sign that these newly arrived aliens have got a bright future ahead of them here. The video’s just as fun too with a wicked sense of humour; low budget to the point it’s got the camera quality of a clip on You’ve Been Framed, capturing the band at work and play – including singer Taliesyn Källström going full man eater (literally) on her pants wearing lampshade slaves. And maybe I’m being a bit Freudian, but some phallic skyscrapers get brought down rather explosively too.
