There is No Reason to Feel Sorry for Dapper Laughs

“Apology – Expressing or showing regretful acknowledgement of an offence or failure.”

Once a teacher of mine told me to never apologise if I didn’t mean it. I’d have thought this was common knowledge, but clearly not. Ex ITV “star” and Facebook “sensation”, Daniel O’Riley, also knows as Dapper Laughs, apologised on Newsnight for his comments towards a female audience member on his ITV2 show, regarding rape. Now I don’t know about you, but I’m sure, along with the vast majority of the world, one would not be “gagging for a rape”, especially not a female audience member.

After a genuine apology, we may have been able to sweep it under the rug and treat it like a Freudian slip, maybe the guy had some underlying issues, but no. Dapper Laughs is an utter twat, no underlying issues here other than being a dick. He apologised not because he was sorry, but because he “had enough”.

This man turned around and blamed society. As a teenager I get it, our society is fucked up, it has its flaws, but it would take an idiot (which it did) to blame society about the lack of education on rape and the objectification of women. To try and cover up his royal cock-up, he makes out that his videos and show was a satire against insecure men, “I’m taking the piss out of insecurities of men – that’s the basis for the comedy. Women hold all the power”. Don’t try licking our arseholes now. There is no one set gender “holding all the power”. Now what was it that we were all most likely taught at a very young age? Oh right, that we’re all equals.

Rather than apologising and dropping the matter, he wants us to sympathise for him. Did he get gang raped on a bus by a bunch of men most likely older and stronger than him in India? Was the girl that did “gagging for it”? There’s no euphemism to cover up and subtle down the true brutalities of rape. But the so called brutality of not being taught about sexual violence, rape and sexism seems to be a bigger issue to Mr Dickhead Dapper Laughs. If you were to tell a child about rape, surely they’d know it’s wrong. A child can understand that the concept of inflicting pain upon another being is wrong, why can’t a grown educated man?

Personally, I’ve always been a fan of comedy that was on the borderline between funny and offensive regardless of the topic, religion, gender, race etc. I didn’t mind, it’s probably why I had Dapper Laughs videos practically owning my Facebook News Feed, which I did find somewhat amusing, but once that line between white and black had been crossed, causing a murky grey inerasable mess, that’s when it went “too far”. But what is just “too far”? Was it the actual line “gagging for a rape”, or was it the aftermath of him blaming society and not accepting the consequences?

Do you think Dapper Laughs went too far with his comedy or has this been one big misunderstood over reaction? Let us know what you think of this big cock-up and comment below!
