The first xXx movie was a moderate hit at the box office, grossing $277,448,382 worldwide, whilst the sequel, in which Vin Diesel did not return, was a flat out bomb, only earning $71,022,693 worldwide against its $87 million budget. This seemed to kill any chances of a third movie, but now we’re getting one, in the form of xXx: Return of Xander Cage, which arrives on July 19, 2016, with Disturbia’s D.J. Caruso directing.
This is despite the fact that Cage was killed off in the appropriately titled official short film The Final Chapter: The Death of Xander Cage, but since when has Hollywood cared about continuity?
Although some were worried that the Return of Xander Cage would flop, Paramount have confirmed that the trailer has accumulated over 100 million views from both Facebook and YouTube combined within its first week of release, so if that’s anything to go by, the movie will do big business.
Which does make sense, as the Fast and Furious movies have propelled Diesel to a much higher level of stardom then he was at with the release of the first xXx movie back in 2002. And with the hugely bankable Samuel L. Jackson returning, it seems like Paramount have a winning formula on their hands.
Or perhaps all those people just clicked on the trailer thinking that it was porn. It’s called xXx, after all.
