Xbox Network Is The New Name For The Console’s Online Infrastructure

Xbox Live no more, kind of. It's not clear.

Last night, news broke courtesy of The Verge that Microsoft were in the process of rebranding their online services, removing the Xbox Live name in favour of referring to their infrastructure as the Xbox network. Users of the console’s dashboard beta has noticed that the Xbox Live name has been replaced with “Xbox network” for functions such as uploading captures and so on.

Have Microsoft Responded To This?

Yes, with a Microsoft spokesperson issuing a statement to The Verge surrounding the change to the Xbox network. In that statement, Microsoft says: “The update from ‘Xbox Live’ to ‘Xbox network’ is intended to distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold memberships.”

This sentiment is echoed further by an additional statement that was issued to Eurogamer this morning, as many have naturally assumed that this news has meant the death of the Xbox Live name. Microsoft said to Eurogamer: “Xbox Live isn’t going away. We are making ongoing adjustments to create a simpler, more descriptive messaging system for Xbox in different areas. None of these experiences or features will change as part of these updates.”

Despite Microsoft confirming that Xbox Live isn’t going anywhere, rebranding the name of the infrastructure to the Xbox network makes the Xbox Live Gold subscription feel like an inconsistent piece of branding. If the Live part is being dropped for the majority , the subscription may as well be called Xbox Gold.
