Riot Prototyping Valorant On Consoles

But only if Riot can capture the same experience on all platforms.

Valorant

In an interview with GameSpot, Valorant’s Executive Producer Anna Donlan has revealed that the team over at Riot Games are currently prototyping bringing the tactical hero shooter to consoles, but there’s no real guarantee that a console version will ever see the light of day.

Donlon told GameSpot:”We are definitely prototyping [Valorant on console] right now, but there’s a way to play this game and there’s a way to experience this game that we’re not entirely sure translates completely to console play.”

Essentially, Riot Games believe that Valorant offers a “strong level of competitive integrity, and that a console version would have to capture the same “experience” as the PC version. If Riot have to “compromise” in any way in order for the console port to work, Riot won’t do it. Donlon adds: “If we feel like we can deliver this experience on those platforms, we absolutely will, but we really want Valorant to stand for a certain type of gameplay and a certain type of experience.”

In the video interview, Anna Donlan mentions that the game’s designers “worry about players feeling like someone they’re playing against has a competitive advantage because of the system they’re playing on”, which to me sounds like Riot would want to implement cross-play in some capacity. That’s just speculation, mind you, but it’s something they could be looking into with Valorant.

While there are plenty of challenges facing a potential console version of Valorant, Donlon mentions in the interview that the designers at Riot are “very excited” to try and prove the potential of Valorant on consoles. Whether or not it’ll actually happen is for history to decide. Would you play a console port of Valorant? Sound off in the comments below.
