Ubisoft Are Looking To Focus More On Mobile & Free-To-Play Games

With a reduced focus on AAA.

Ubisoft

French publishers Ubisoft revealed during a recent investors call that they’re looking to diversify their games line-up, focusing more on free-to-play and mobile games based on their current back catalogue. As such, they’re toning down their focus on AAA experiences.

Ubisoft Are Making Less AAA Games?

Well, perhaps less is the wrong way to look at it. It would appear like Ubisoft want to become less reliant on AAA experiences going forward, bolstering their premium offerings with mobile and free-to-play titles. The news was reported by IGN, who made note of this news from Ubisoft’s earnings call for Q3 ending December 2020.

CFO for Ubisoft Frederick Duguet said that the company wants to become less reliant on AAA releases: “We said for a number of years that our normal template is to come with either three or four AAA games, so we’ll stick to that plan for fiscal 2022. But we see that we are progressively, continuously moving from a model that used to be only focused on AAA releases to a model where we have a combination of strong releases from AAA and strong back catalog dynamics, but also complimenting our program of new releases with free-to-play and other premium experiences.”

Haven’t Ubisoft Already Made That Move?

Yes, Ubisoft have already attempted to move into the free-to-play battle royale market with Hyper Scape, which launched so badly that the game is now being overhauled. That said, Ubisoft’s AAA line-up seems to be under more scrutiny after the failure of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, as pretty much every big game coming up has been delayed, including Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six: Quarantine, The Prince Of Persia: Sands of Time remake, Skull and Bones and more.
