In a surprise announcement on Twitter, Josh Trank, director of Capone (previously titled Fonzo), revealed the trailer for Capone and at the same time, announced that the movie would skip a theatrical release and go straight to Video on Demand (VOD), courtesy of Vertical Entertainment. Tom Hardy is barely recognisable in the trailer, transformed into the notorious gangster. Capone explores the last leg of Al Capone’s life, exploring his descent into syphilitic dementia as the FBI build a case on him.

Accompanying Trank’s tweet is the cheeky assertion of “Different title. My cut”, which makes reference to his previous film Fantastic Four. After the movie was released, Trank came out to say that the final product wasn’t his intended vision for the movie, having to battle movie studio 20th Century Fox for creative control. As we all know, Fantastic Four was a critical flop and did poorly at the box office, earning a worldwide total of 167 million USD on a budget of 120 million USD.
While it remains to be seen how Capone will be received, at least Trank gets to deliver an end result that is his own creative vision. Rian Johnson, director of Knives Out and The Last Jedi, tweeted his excitement about the movie as well, calling it “batshit bonkers (in the best possible way)” and asking everyone to go see it when it is released.
Capone will be released digitally May 12, 2020.
