Tina Fey Announces a Film Adaptation of Mean Girls’ Musical

That's so fetch!

Mean Girls

According to Variety, Mean Girls will be making its way back to the big screen, this time as a movie musical. As we know, Tina Fey starred in and penned the script for the 2004 film Mean Girls, which after its success went on to be adapted to a musical. Fey will once again pen the script for the Mean Girls movie musical, bringing her back to the world she created 16 years ago.

In a statement, she mentioned how “incredibly gratifying [it has been] to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences.” She even likens it to her own Marvel universe. The plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment though, so clearly it won’t be a simple rehash of previous source material.

The musical, which is currently on Broadway, is produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman and Paramount Pictures, with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Richmond and Benjamin will be handling the music and lyrics for the movie musical as well. The Mean Girls musical made its premiere on Broadway in March 2018 and received 12 Tony nominations in that same year.

It was also announced that the musical will move to London’s West End in 2021.
