Niantic, the developers of Pokémon Go, have released a video detailing a fan’s incredible weight loss over the course of playing the game.

Tommy, a University of Greenwich student, revealed how he no longer recognised himself in photos after gaining weight and reaching almost 25 stone, eventually deciding to turn to Pokémon Go to help him lose weight while also starting a quest to catch ’em all.

Already a fan of Pokémon, Tommy was recommended to start playing Go by a friend. After initially expecting he’d only be out and about for half an hour, Tommy’s first time with the game saw him walk for three hours. According to a friend, he would regularly take part in 20 km walks.

In just one year, Tommy lost an incredible ten stone, going on to join a Pokémon Go group and making plenty of new friends. Tommy reflected on how Pokémon Go has helped him in more than just a physical sense, it boosting his confidence as well.

In 2019, players of Pokémon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite walked a combined 23 billion kilometers, which roughly translates to walking the circumference of the planet 573,923 times.

Sitting here, feeling the muscle in my legs evaporate as I F5 the traffic analytics for the website and trying to suppress the screams, maybe it’s about time I downloaded Pokémon Go again.
