The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith To Write Quentin Tarantino’s R-Rated Star Trek Film

Quentin Tarantino has recruited The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith to script his upcoming R-rated Star Trek movie, which will be produced by J.J. Abrams, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Plot details are being kept under wraps, and we don’t yet know if the film will take place in either the Prime timeline or the alternate reality Kelvin timeline created for the recent trilogy. No cast members have been confirmed either, but it’s safe to say that Samuel L. Jackson will appear, because he’s in pretty much everything Tarantino makes.

Tarantino’s next film will be his Charles Mansion-themed drama, which is set to be released in 2019. For obvious reasons, The Weinstein Company, who usually distribute Tarantino’s movies, won’t be involved, with Sony Pictures instead handling distribution duties. Tarantino’s most recently released film was 2015’s The Hateful Eight, which grossed an impressive $155,760,117 against a budget of $44 million.

Should Tarantino’s planned Star Trek film go ahead, it will be the first time a movie in the franchise has gone anywhere near R-rated territory, although Star Trek: Discovery, which is currently airing on CBS All Access, has a fair amount of gore and even dropped a few F-bombs. Paramount are also in desperate need of a hit after an endless stream of bombs, so perhaps letting Tarantino breath new life into one of their biggest franchises will pay off for them should the film be a success.
