Sony Winding Down Production of the PlayStation 3 in Japan

PS3

The PlayStation 3 has had one of the more interesting stories in console history. Outrageously priced at launch, it struggled to match the Xbox 360 and was a million miles away from the successes of the Wii. Despite that, it had a multitude of great exclusives and was even used by the US Air Force to build a supercomputer.

But with the current generation firmly in place, the PS4 has superseded the PS3 and its production has started to slow right down. With only the occasional new game that isn’t a yearly sports title, the PS3’s nearing the end of its life, so it should be no surprise that Sony are about to end production in Japan.

There’s only one model of PS3 still being developed: the charcoal black 500GB version (model number CECH-4300C). Sony recently announced on the PS3’s product page that “shipments are scheduled to conclude soon”.

Considering how the PS3 was supposed to last ten years when it was announced in 2006, it looks like the promise has more than been kept. My PS3 continues to draw breath, though it is starting to sound a lot like an emphysemic old lady with ninety cats.

There’s been no news on how this will change other regions for PS3 distribution, but if it’s happening in Japan, it won’t be long before everywhere else follows suit and lays the console to rest.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to gather wood and fuel for a Viking burial.
