Single of the Week: Swindle x Daley – Sympathy

Swindle is one of those rare, wonderful musicians who simply excels at every kind of music he approaches. In his short, vibrant career he’s turned his hand to dubstep, grime, funk, jungle, jazz and more, and every time it just fits together beautifully, both in the studio and on stage. Music just seems to make sense to Swindle, which kind of reminds me of somebody else – Prince.

Now, it would be a bit unfair to directly compare the two, their backgrounds and approaches are remarkably different, but what is interesting is seeing what happens when Swindle approaches the Prince style. Thankfully, we don’t have to wonder, we have the Purple Walls EP, which came out a few weeks ago, and we have the leading single – ‘Sympathy’.

Purple Walls is the third in a planned trilogy of EPs. The first was Connecta, which was made with local musicians in Brazil. Funk & Grime brought a small clutch of grime’s heaviest hitters, and now we have the last, recorded in Los Angeles. It blends two of the most interesting scenes going at the moment – the LA funk/jazz scene and the ever-changing soundsystem culture of the UK.

On ‘Sympathy’, Swindle brought in vocalist and Gorillaz collaborator Daley, and the results are almost too funky to handle. It’s been fascinating watching Swindle progress as a musician, and we can only imagine where he’ll go from here.
