Single of the Week: Rachael Dadd – Strike Our Scythes

My single of the week is the brilliant ‘Strike Our Scythes’ by Bristol alt folk star, Rachael Dadd. Her work has received critical acclaim from across the music world, including support from Lauren Laverne, and she has previously been described as “An artist destined to define the genre”.

The single will be released on October 6th on record label ‘Lost Map Records’. It comes on a split 7” vinyl, along with fellow Bristol songstress Rozi Plain’s latest single: ‘Jogalong’.

Grainy, laid back ukulele strums open the track, combined shortly thereafter with Dadd’s Joni Mitchell-esque vocals. Rattling percussion and harmonies act as a base for Dadd to layer her syrup-smooth vocals over. The quirkiness of this track only adds to its soothing charm. The whimsical harmonies and pecking drums flow and pop throughout the four minute runtime. The soft, whispering voice of Rachael Dadd is captivating throughout. Rising, flowing melodies are intertwined to every verse and chorus, this track is a must listen for fans of Jolie Holland, Joni Mitchell and musicians of their alt-folk ilk. Simple, whimsical, effective.

An undoubtedly interesting, intriguing and entirely charming track, from a musician who is only going to continue gaining momentum.
