As I write this, I am in fact a ruin. The kind of ruin that you would find on the ocean floor, had the ocean evaporated and left only desert in its place. The kind of ruin that lies in its new dried out landscape glugging down water, desperately trying to rehydrate the brittle sponge that now resides where its brain once lived, whinging to anyone who’ll listen about its self-inflicted ailment with long, drawn out moans and grunts. The kind of ruin that writes over one hundred words of introduction to a SINGLE OF THE WEEK feature based on a bad joke based on the SINGLE OF THE WEEK‘s title, then gets all meta about it.
Now that that’s done, ‘I’m A Ruin’ is the latest single from Marina And The Diamonds and in fact has no thematic relation to my hangover or terrible shipwreck metaphors. It is instead a reflective and confessional song about being the one in relationship that decides to end it and the guilt that person goes through being the one who hurt someone else, showing how it can be just as difficult being the dumper as it is the dumpee. The song steers clear of self-pity though as it’s quite up front with the inherent selfishness that comes with such an undertaking, but a selfishness that’s necessary sometimes.
‘I’m A Ruin’ is a cut off of Marina And The Diamonds newest album, Froot, which showcases Marina Diamandis’s continued development as a songwriter and evolution of sound, offering up a mature and eclectic mix of synth-laden tracks, lifted further by Diamandis’s vocal prowess and quirky performances. Coinciding with the artily atmospheric tone of the track itself the music video is equally arty and atmospheric with some stunning visuals and expressive dance moves to boot. Kate Bush vibes galore.
