Single of the Week: ‘Grim Deal’ by Pulled Apart By Horses

Pulled Apart By Horses (PABH to close friends) are firm favourites at Cultured Vultures Headquarters (CV HQ to close friends), and with the latest single to drop from their 2014 album, Blood, it’s plain for everyone to see why, even you. It is far from your typical single fodder, in fact you may go so far as to say its atypical, with its wholly ‘I’m not a single’ demeanour, all growling and prowling around in the Technicolor murk of a schlocky B-movie on grainy VHS. Though, that’s just the video.

The song itself is the strained crawl of a drunken fairground band, clambering around in woozy, distorted melodies, stumbling with swagger rhythms, pained vocals, and the occasional burst of tranquilised feral animal fighting back before its eventual collapse. As I said, it’s not your standard single, and that is exactly the reason why it’s our SINGLE OF THE WEEK – we are CULTURED VULTURES and we don’t obey the rules! We will pick your bones clean as you die!

Okay, that last part was a little bit much on the outburst front, but I stand by our collective disobedience, because that’s cool, and if you were really cool you wouldn’t listen to what anyone said and would listen to, and do, exactly what we say. In this case it’s to listen to the awesome new single, Grim Deal, from Pulled Apart By Horses, watch its video, then read our INTERVIEW WITH THE BAND FROM A FEW MONTHS BACK. Next time it might be to jump off a cliff or put your hands in the fire, which you better do.
