Rust Finally Lets You Pick Up and Move Work Benches

Game. Changer.

Rust is a very unique game with oddities and quirks like few other games out there, so much so that you could spend 1000 hours on it and still learn something new. With the September 2020 update, Rust is smoothing out one of its biggest quirks: you will now be able to pick up and move Work Benches.

Previously, players had to destroy Work Benches to put in a new one, which was just a major nuisance with how much damage they took. This was especially irritating for those who had smaller living spaces as the higher level workbenches also took up more room.

Now, all players have to do is whip out their Hammer and pick their work bench up, putting it back in their inventory and making it easy to place elsewhere.

From the announcement:

“Work Benches can now be picked up and moved. This is likely to impact gameplay in a variety of ways and we will be monitoring this in the coming weeks.”

While this may seem small, it’s difficult to understate just how game-changing this tweak could be. Being able to pick up and move a Work Bench for your drill in a raid could make a huge difference in how players approach raids from now on. Adding to that, there no longer has to be any dodgy deals with people using your Level 3 when you could just give it to them outside your base and make them use it there and then instead of them having to come inside.

This is just one part of Rust’s huge September update, which will be deployed at 7PM BST today (September 3rd).

UPDATE JUNE 1st, 2021: this is a PC-specific update, you aren’t able to move workbenches in Rust: Console Edition.
