A Remake of Christopher Nolan’s Memento Announced

Memento film

Most filmgoers will know Christopher Nolan as the director behind The Dark Knight trilogy and the mind screwing Inception. Before all that, however, was a small film that put him near the top of every movie studios’ watchlist, called Memento. Well, this week it was revealed Memento would be receiving the old remake treatment.

Memento follows the story of Leonard (Guy Pierce), suffering anterograde amnesia, unable to recall memories after a crucial event. The movie follows two different stories, one chronological and one reverse-chronological, with both meeting in the middle for the film’s finale.

Exactly how Memento could benefit from a retelling is difficult to understand. Such a carefully structured movie from a genuine auteur hardly appears open to a ‘fresh take’ or ‘new story’ as these kinds of remake are want to claim.

The trigger for the project is, sadly, basically a business matter. Film firm AMBI Pictures recently got hold of the film library of another company, called Exclusive Media Group. This, of course, sounds very boring but it basically means AMBI have a load of intellectual properties lying around and aren’t going to be coy about recycling them.

Even something as pointless as a Memento remake.

According to the internet there are 400 movies in AMBI’s new library, including Donnie Darko, End of Watch and Cruel Intentions. What a time to be alive.

AMBI are also planning to launch a $200 million dollar film fund, with the Memento remake presumably being the first project. Let’s hope they find some original ideas, rather than relying on their new catalogue of pre-existing mid-brow pictures. It’s touch and go whether earth can handle any more remakes as it is.
