The long awaited genre mash-up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies finally has its first teaser trailer, and it’s basically what you where expecting.

Based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith (and Jane Austen?) the film will follow Elizabeth Bennet, daughter of a gentleman of modest means, and her family. The Jane Austen original, set in the British Regency period of the early 19th century, mainly follows Elizabeth as she meets the inscrutable Mr Darcy. This version looks to follow the same basic plot, but with zombies.

Judging from the trailer Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has fully committed to the costume drama elements of the setting. All the ball gowns and rich-people dance halls look authentic, and there’s even some romantic period drama music playing in the background. It’s a lot of effort to go to for something that’s essentially a parody.

Downton Abbey’s Lily James stars as Elizabeth and is front and centre of this teaser. If you’re careful though, you’ll also spot glimpses of Doctor Who’s Matt Smith as Mr Collins and BAFTA nominee Sam Riley as Mr Darcy. Also? The great Lena Heady’s in this. Cersei Lannister killing zombies you guys.

If the whole comedy of manners thing and the subtle social satire is not your bag though, there’s also explosions and sword fighting. Unfortunately the teaser does little more than set up the film’s basic premise: costume drama but zombies. Exactly how these two contrasting elements will mesh together on screen we’ll have to wait for in future trailers.

What little we can glean from the trailer suggests this could be either incredibly goofy, or maybe, just maybe, it could strike the perfect balance. Honestly, I’m not sure which of the two I’d prefer the most.

The film comes out in February 2016. Keep an eye out for more trailers though to find out what sort of tone it’s going for overall.
