Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Game Story Skates Onto Indiegogo

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5

Anyone who grew up in the ’90s will have fond memories of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series of videogames. I’m not really into sports games (yes, skateboarding is considered a sport), but I’ll never forget the countless hours I spent trying to achieve a high score on the first Pro Skater game by trying to carry out the most dangerous and crazy stunts imaginable without wearing a helmet, whilst the Goldfinger song Superman blared in the background (more or that later). Or rushing out to buy Pro Skater 4 because it featured Jango Fett as a playable character, only to be horribly disappointed by how useless his jetpack proved to be in gameplay (same with Iron Man in Underground).

And whilst the franchise has had something of a hiatus as of late (aside from the abysmal Pro Skater 5, which was presumably only made so that Activision could retain the rights, making it into what is known in the industry as an Ashcan copy), an Indiegogo campaign has been launched to fund a feature-length documentary about the series. Titled Pretending I’m a Superman: The Tony Hawk Game Story, it takes its name from the aforementioned Goldfinger song that became closely associated with the games.

The series was initially developed by the now defunct LA studio Neversoft, with their employees being interviewed alongside Hawk himself. Neversoft producer Ralph D’Amato is also serving as the film’s producer.

He may have an estimated personal net worth of $120 million, but he humbly admits that were it not for the games, he would no longer be relevant. Humility is a sign of greatness, I suppose. If memories of the Pro Skater games also bring a smile to your face, be sure to donate to the campaign before it ends next month.
