Playlist of the Week: Pacific Beats

Another week, another tasty playlist for your listening pleasure. This week, things are getting regional. Everyone is well versed in the complex histories of the East and West Coast rap scenes, but basically every part of America has its own signature slice of hip-hop history. The Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Idaho, Washington State) is no different, and in fact there’s a particular flavour of hip-hop that you can only find in the PNW.

To some, the only artists of note to emanate from this coastal stretch are, sadly, Sir-Mix-A-Lot and Macklemore. There’s far more to it than that. Rappers were emerging in Seattle as early as the 1970s, and the scene gestated in its own isolated little world, with the world only recently taking serious, long overdue notice. From Seattle’s Blue Scholars to Oddisee in D.C., it’s become the scene to watch, especially given its strong ties to the towering Rhymesayers movement. So, this playlist is dedicated to all things PNW, and yes, Macklemore is on here, but only as a featured verse, and trust me it’s a verse you should give your full attention.
