That’s right 90s kids, the chances of the original Power Rangers appearing in the new big budget movie just took a nose dive. According to original Black Ranger Walter Jones the Mighty Morphin rangers weren’t offered a chance to make an appearance in the new adventure, which to my mind is a total outrage.
Speaking on the Audibly Exquisite Podcast Jones said: “It’s not likely. Unfortunately, we were not invited to be part of the film, which is confusing to me, but I’m excited about the film nevertheless.”
Those who remember the original Power Rangers team of Zack, Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Trini and Tommy will understand that this roster of rangers was the definitive set. Actor Jason David Frank, who played Tommy, has especially been open to returning – and has done so on several occasions. Perhaps Saban Films and Lionsgate can find space for some Stan Lee like cameos in the new film.
The upcoming movie, simply titled Power Rangers, looks to be a clean break for the series. With a reported budget of $120 million expect the franchise to do for 90s kids what the Transformers films did for 80s kids.
While this new outing can never truly match the greatness that was the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, it does have Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston as Zordon. If it’s a hit we might even get to see sequels involving the likes of Lord Zedd, Ivan Ooze and the Masked Rider. Start your fantasy casting now.
The Power Rangers reboot hits theatres in March 2017.
