New Band Of The Month: Calling Apollo

calling apollo band

As I mentioned last month, there are numerous ways in which bands come together. In the case of last month’s band, the awesome Joanna Gruesome, it was being mutually angry. In the case of this month’s band, the also awesome Calling Apollo, it was just a case of things (or members) falling into place.

After each having a few cracks of the musical whip individually and among other bands, they’d all sort of hit that point of being just plain fed up with it all. So, they each branched out, scouring the web and local music scenes for likeminded lost souls, drifting waywardly through musical space.

That was until the good ship Calling Apollo came right on by, picking them up one by one. This ship’s HAL-like control system informed them they would not make it home unless the provided a soundtrack for the journey. Quickly making use of the on board instruments, the band got playing, the ship dug it pretty hard and brought them on home. Upon arrival they decided it would be a pretty good idea keep this thing going, because it was exactly were drifting through space looking for.

In all seriousness though, that story is completely true, and I will even state that under oath by way of a lie detector. Moving on, since their arrival home from space (specifically to south Wales) the band have recorded a debut EP in the shape of Vessels, and have also been notching plenty of gigs onto their five piece bedpost. The band recently released their debut single, Clone City, which has found the band further honing their individual sound and really setting themselves apart from the crowd.

The band churn out a futuristic progressive rock sound that takes in elements of alt-rock, post-hardcore, scream, and an ambient sense of melody that isn’t afraid to get aggressive and abrasive when it needs to hammer it home. I’d mostly recommend you just damn well listen to them and enjoy it, but if you’re still needing a little convincing before pressing play, and going to visit their bandcamp (HERE BY THE WAY).

Some sonic touchstones to consider: Circa Survive, The Mars Volta, The Sound of Animals Fighting, The Fall of Troy, The Blood Brothers, Maybeshewill, Billy Talent, Deftones.
