Netflix’s Best New Films And Shows For March 2018

Netflix March

Netflix has scheduled a grand total of 54 new Netflix original series’ and movies to premiere over the next four weeks, topping the company’s previous one-month record by a longshot. That number doesn’t include bought licensed shows or old favourites, so March is shaping up to be an exciting time for subscribers to the ubiquitous streaming service – especially since it’s the return of some Netflix favourites. Check out some of the picks below.

Flint Town

This true crime Netflix original documentary follows the cops – and the citizens – in a crime-ravaged US city. It’s a graphic look inside the Flint Police Department, following several members of the force as they battle personal and professional issues. On the flip side, we hear from those who distrust the department and are sick of living in poverty. If there’s any message the series is trying to convey, it’s that more attention needs to be paid to the issues surrounding crime in the US. Catch season 1 from early March.

Jessica Jones

The long-awaited second season of the show that spotlights the alcoholic badass private eye is finally here as Jessica takes on a new case after the events of season 1 – and it looks like David Tennant’s Kilgrave will be back in some form, although no one knows how or why. One thing is for sure – it won’t be simple, considering what happened at the end of season 1, and it’s sure to be a fun ride. Tune in from early March.

Benji

This cute dog has been around since the 1970s and now it’s Netflix’s turn to cash in on the successful franchise with this reboot. Like in the past movies, Benji heals a broken family after he is taken home by two children. A heartwarming family movie that the kids will love, it will also appeal to all the sappy dog-loving adults out there. It’ll be available mid-March.

Annihilation

Natalie Portman leads us into a twisted world in this sci-fi thriller. Biologist Lena’s soldier husband is suddenly found after being MIA, but she soon realises that he came back from wherever he went different – violent and aggressive. He’s hospitalised and she’s whisked away by a psychologist who informs her his mission took him inside ‘the shimmer’, a rapidly expanding area that’s taken the lives of everyone who has entered – bar him. She joins a new mission to find out what’s inside and discover whether she can save her husband’s life. It’s out from mid-March and already has promising reviews, so be sure to check it out.

21 Thunder

This series follows the players and coaches of a Montreal soccer team as they chase dreams of stardom while their personal lives erupt around them. It’s tense, gritty and looks to be a hell of a ride – and pretty dramatic, with a pretty cast of teenagers entangled in scandal after scandal. If you like that kind of thing, an early March release date will keep you happy.

Game Over, Man!

From the creators of Workaholics comes a movie starring… well, the same guys. Adam Devine, Blake Anderson and Anders Holm are three slacker buddies who must save their workplace, an LA hotel hosting a lot of big celebrity names, from gun-wielding terrorists. With a screenplay written by Holm and directed by Workaholics director Kyle Newacheck, it’s sure to be along a similar comedy vein as the slapstick series but maybe with a bit more action. Springing onto the scene mid-month so keep a lookout.

The Outsider

Starring Jared Leto, this action thriller follows Nick Lowell, an American soldier who finds himself indebted to the Yakuza after World War II. He must serve the organization to earn his freedom. It’s drawing a lot of controversy for its choice of a white protagonist in a film about Asian culture, but whatever your opinion about casting, check out the gritty, dark movie from early March.

Ladies First

In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8, this Netflix original documentary introduces the world to an inspiring woman by the name of Deepika Kumar. She rose from poverty and oppression in her rural hometown in India to become the world’s No.1 female archer at 18 – stumbling upon the sport when she was foraging for food at age 12. This in-depth documentary is a must-see for men and women.

Ricky Gervais: Humanity

In his first special in 7 years, Ricky aims his trademark commentary at aging, celebrities, and a society that takes everything personally. Ricky sold the show, which he’s still touring in the UK, to Netflix for the highest fee ever paid for a UK stand-up special, so it’s clear he’s still in high demand. It will be out globally on March 13.

Collateral

Starring Carey Mulligan, the contemporary detective series starts off with a delivery driver in Southwark, London, getting shot in the head as he finishes his Uber drop-off, but soon delves further into the world of politics, institutions and society. Written by legendary British playwright Sir David Hare, it’s getting raving reviews and has a killer soundtrack to boot. This will be old news for those in the UK as the series dropped early, but for the rest of the world, its release date is slated for mid-to-late March.

3rd Rock from the Sun

This isn’t a new show, but it’s a good one. For those growing up in the late 90s, it’s sure to take you down nostalgia lane, while for the younger generation it will be a completely foreign concept – aliens landing on earth in human bodies and attempting to adjust to society. The entire award-winning series starring John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson and a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be available to watch mid-March.
