NES Classic Returning To Stores Next Month

After an agonizingly long wait, the NES Classic will finally be returning to stores next month, as confirmed in a tweet from Nintendo of America. It will be available from June 29, although it’s likely that Nintendo will pull another stunt by limiting its availability in order to increase consumer demand. We know Nintendo too well by this point to not be suspicious of them pulling another stunt like that.

Despite the deliberately limited availability issues, the NES Classic still managed to sell 2.3 units when it was initially released in 2016. The games featured on the $60 console included the vast majority of notable first-party NES titles, such as the Super Mario Bros. trilogy, Metroid, Kirby’s Adventure, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong Jr., and The Legend of Zelda and its sequel. Third-party titles include Pac-Man, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Super Contra, and Ninja Gaiden.

Discontinuing the NES Classic several months after its initial release was the worst decision made by Nintendo since Tingle’s Balloon Trip of Love, but we can expect the system to fly off shelves when it comes back next month. However, there’s no word on how long it will be available, so you’d better make sure you get yours quickly. With any luck, Nintendo will finally wise up and realize that it’s not a good idea to discontinue something which brings you a steady source of income.
