The Intercontinental Championship remains a constant in the world of WWE. First established in 1979 under the WWF, the white and gold title acted as a stepping stone for mid-card wrestlers to be elevated into the main event scene. The Intercontinental title was best known for its presence in some of WWE’s finest matches, most notably the show-stealing encounter between Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat and Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage at WrestleMania 3, a time when top-quality wrestling wasn’t often seen.

Having gone through numerous redesigns throughout key eras of wrestling history, the IC Championship continues to allow aspiring superstars to showcase their ability to put on stellar matches, on par with the headlining stars.

But which iconic wrestler has managed to score the most reigns with the coveted mid-card prize? Well, look no further than AEW’s ‘Le Champion’, Chris Jericho.

‘Y2J’ has made a career of excelling in mid-card championship matches, having captured the IC title a total of 9 times throughout his WWE tenure. Jericho prides himself on his ability to produce entertaining matches with just about anyone, and during his various runs as the top of the mid-card, he would often find himself in competition with the likes of: Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy, Rey Mysterio and Chris Benoit.

His Intercontinental Championship matches have evolved into timeless classics, with his Royal Rumble Ladder match against the aforementioned Benoit widely considered one of, if not, the greatest IC title match of all time.

The Intercontinental Championship continues to act as a means of spotlighting future stars in WWE’s crowded mid-card scene. With former champions such as The Miz (8 reigns) and Dolph Ziggler (6 reigns) regularly finding themselves featured in the title scene, there’s a chance that one day Chris Jericho’s record total could very well be broken.
