Along with the long awaited reveal of the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, Konami also confirmed that Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 1 will launch in Autumn 2023 for PS5, as well as presumably other platforms, as part of PlayStation Showcase 2023.

The collection will feature Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 2 (the best game of all time), and the original Snake Eater. The latter two games will be their previously released HD Collection versions, so it will be interesting to see what’s been done to those to bring them more in line with this generation.

Vol 2 hasn’t yet been revealed, but it’s fair to say that MGS 4 won’t be on it thanks to the PS3’s wacky backwards compatibility stuff.

The original games were removed from digital storefronts owing to licensing issues, but it looks like those have been resolved. Master Collection Vol 1 will tide over all us Foxhounds until the third game’s remake presumably sometime in 2024.

Here is what the dev team has to say about the compilation:

“Simultaneously, we will deliver the METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION series, the most complete compilation that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series. The METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION allow fans to play the games as they were, as first released on the latest platforms.”

This is far from the first collection of Metal Gear games. First came the NTSC exclusive Essential Collection for the PS2, which packaged MGS 1 (still on a PS1 disc), MGS 2, and MGS 3 in one collection. HD Collection followed with remasters of 2, 3 and Peace Walker for various platforms, then came The Legacy Collection released in 12 for the PS3, which combined every Metal Gear game up until 4, though mostly as codes. Here’s hoping both volumes of the Master Collection feature everything on a disc, though they won’t include the original Metal Gear games from what we can tell.
