Marvel Release First Doctor Strange Trailer

Doctor Strange trailer

After teasing us with what can only be described as Marvel’s most gorgeous poster, the trailer for Doctor Strange was also released, debuting on American late night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live as part of the hosts “Marvel Week”.

So what sorcery was afoot in this trailer? Well it opens with several shots of the car crash that turns world renowned neurosurgeon Steven Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch in the leading role, into a broken man. After the accident, his hands are no longer the steady tools for performing operations and so he leaves New York to find something greater than himself. Like a gap year but for famous surgeons whose careers have hit somewhat of a dead end.

Tilda Swinton then leads the trailer saying that “your work saved the life of thousands, what if I told you that reality is one of many?”, the aforementioned actress then appears, shaven head and all, to literally push Steven’s mind from his body. Swinton plays the Ancient One, a teacher of many mystical people and one who takes Strange under her wing to turn him into the Sorcerer Supreme.

Several more shots continue to show this magical realm of the MCU, we see Mads Mikkelsen playing the as yet unknown villain, who is described by Kevin Feige, the producer, as “a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect”. There’s a quick shot of Baron Mordo played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a nemesis of Strange in the comics, but in this adaptation the former student of the Ancient One is working with Steven against evil.

A stunning Inception-like shot is glimpsed, with New York shifting and bending as Strange falls through it, the Ancient One showing off her powers. “Teach me”, Strange then says. The trailer ends with Cumberbatch in full costume walking up steps to the window in his Sanctum Santorum, the base of Strange’s mystical exploits and is a central point for supernatural energy.

The comparisons to Nolan’s Batman Begins are staggering, not that I’m complaining, the trailer feels very not Marvel in general, something that I’m more than happy with, after Ant-Man’s heist movie changed the pace of the MCU films I’ll gladly welcome another weird and wonderful member to the line-up. We will see more in the months to come leading up to the November 4th release date.
