Another week, another Marvel TV show in development. This time TV Line are citing an unnamed source who claims Marvel are looking to develop a New Warriors TV series with ABC. On top of this, it’s also claimed the show will be lead by one of comics’ recent breakout characters: Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.

Right now, you probably fall into one of two camps on this. If you sit in the first camp you’re screaming “oh my god, Squirrel Girl!” while squeeing around your bedroom. Everyone in the second camp, though, are probably muttering “so who’s Squirrel Girl?”.

Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, is a Marvel comics character created by artist Steve Ditko and writer Will Murray in the early 90s. It wasn’t until 2015 though when Green got her big break, as lead of her own comic book series The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Since then she’s become part of a wave of female comic book characters aimed at younger female readers, alongside the likes of Kamala Khan in Ms Marvel and Barbara Gordon in Batgirl.

As a superhero Squirrel Girl has the usual super speed and strength, but also the nifty ability to speak to Squirrels. As in she can actually speak the language of the squirrels, which is pretty neat.

The news she might be coming to TV, even if we don’t know where or when, is a huge deal. According to TV Line, their source pitches the show as a half hour comedy which could land on either cable or a Netflix-like streaming service. The New Warriors are often thought of as the junior version of the Avengers, ranked with younger, teenaged heroes.

The question of who could portray Squirrel Girl on screen had already become a talking point before this recent rumour, however. Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect, Trolls) and Shannon Purser (Stranger Things) have both shown interest in the role. Whether either of them would be interested in leading the New Warriors is another question.
