As the barriers between platforms have slowly broken down, cross-play has become more of a standard feature in gaming across all genres. Whether it’s racing games, shooters or even fighting games, the opportunity for cross-play is a tantalising one. With the release of The King Of Fighters XV on PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, the question of cross-play rears its head once again. Here’s everything you need to know about whether cross-play is available in KOF XV.

King Of Fighters XV Cross-Play Platforms

PC
Steam and Epic Games Store

PlayStation
PS4 & PS5

Xbox Series X | S
Xbox Series X | S only

Where available, cross-play should automatically be enabled, though for reference, we were playing on the Xbox Series X | S version.

PlayStation players will be able to experience cross-play between PS4 and PS5 players, but those who play on either PC or Xbox Series X | S will be tied to just players on those respective platforms. Essentially, it’s cross-generation play for PlayStation, and cross-play between Epic Games Store and Steam, but considering that there’s no Xbox One launch for KOF XIV, Xbox players have no other generation to play with.

The decision to not implement cross-play, at least between console players (meaning PC players could still enjoy mods and so on) is baffling. Fighting games, especially ones that are a bit more niche like KOF in comparison to Tekken, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, need the server population benefits that come with cross-play, as it extends the lifespan of a game massively.

Of course, cross-play takes a lot of work to implement, so it shouldn’t be an expected feature of every game that releases, even if it is hard to deny the benefits. If nothing else, at least SNK did more to implement cross-generation play than Techland did, considering that PS4 and PS5 players can’t even play together in Dying Light 2.

The King of Fighters XV is available on PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X & S.
