To say that Jushin Liger has been an influential name in the wrestling industry is a massive understatement. The masked man from Japan’s junior heavyweight division changed the game for wrestlers who weren’t quite fitting the same mould as the heavyweights. Liger became globally recognised as one of the best, and after over 30 years of service, Jushin is hanging up the boots this coming January in the Tokyo Dome.

Jushin announced his retirement plans as part of a NJPW press conference, following his defeat to current IWGP Junior Heavyweight champ, Taiji Ishimori, on yesterday’s anniversary show. There is currently no word on exactly what plans or events are in place for his retirement date in the Dome, but it would be safe to assume that he will be celebrated in glorious fashion by his home-country fandom.

The 54 year old veteran has seen copious success throughout his career, winning championships in WCW, Dragon Gate, Pro Wresting NOAH and of course holding the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title a total of 11 times. Liger has continually captivated audiences all over the world, even managing to fit in a quick mainstream cameo as part of NXT, putting on an excellent match against Tyler Breeze in 2015.

Jushin Liger is confirmed to be wrestling as part of the G1 Supercard in Madison Square Garden next month as well as making his last independent appearances across the globe. So, if you’ve never had the chance to sit down and appreciate a Jushin Liger match, please catch him while you can.

Liger’s innovation and influence on the industry has been incredible, his retirement has been well earned.
