John Carpenter Wants To Direct Movies Again

He’s one of the most famous men in modern horror, the creator of classics such as Halloween, The Fog and The Thing. But John Carpenter, now 70, has only directed one film in the past 17 years, 2010’s critically-panned The Ward. Yet, with a direct sequel to the first Halloween movie out in cinemas later this month (which Carpenter composed the music for), he has expressed his desire to get back behind the camera.

As he told Entertainment Weekly on Sunday, “I would love to direct something, if it’s the right thing to do at my age.” Just don’t hold your breath for a sequel to The Thing. Carpenter claims that at his age, filming The Thing 2 would be too physically stressful: “I’m not going to the Arctic again. I’m not going to do that. I want to take it easy. I want to enjoy myself!”

Perhaps inspired by Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now, John Carpenter has been eyeing the sunnier climes of Venice for his next film, although he hasn’t got a story for it yet. As he says of The Floating City, “What a place! What a strange place! And Venice is sinking!” By any means, a John Carpenter take on the giallo genre would be something to behold!

Considering the massive hype for the latest Halloween instalment, its safe to say that John Carpenter’s return to film would be a massively anticipated event. But he is in no rush, as watching basketball and playing video games are currently the two most important things in his life: “I love that. That’s my job now, to sit around and do nothing!”

Somebody send him a script.
