If your level of excitement over the upcoming Hellraiser reboot from Spyglass Entertainment has been middling so far, the recent announcement over the movie’s rating might just change your mind. One of two major Hellraiser projects, the upcoming film reboot will feature Sense8 actress Jamie Clayton in the role of the Hell Priest (previously known by fans as Pinhead), will be directed by David Bruckner of The Night House, and has now been officially rated R.
What does that mean? While we don’t have a lot of information on the actual plot as of yet, nor do we know when the release will make its debut as a Hulu original, the rating indicates a movie that will feature “Strong bloody horror violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual content, and brief graphic nudity.” We also know that Clive Barker himself will be on board as a producer, and everything we currently know about this project indicates that he is actively part of the current effort to bring the Cenobites back with style.
The new Hellraiser film promises to be a “loyal yet evolved re-imagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic.” That sounds like the sort of thing anyone would promise when tasked with reimagining one of the most beloved horror films of the past 40 years. With an R rating behind it, a promising new take on the concept of the Hell priest, and a budget considerably higher than the last few entries in the long-running franchise, there’s a lot to be excited about.
We also know the movie will debut before the other major project, a HBO series that currently has directors and writers such as David Gordon Green (Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills), Michael Dougherty (Trick r Treat, Godzilla: King of the Monsters), and Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica) behind it.
